What we do

Institutional Strengthening

We support governments, regulators and regional institutions to strengthen governance, operational readiness, organisational effectiveness and long-term sustainability. Our focus is on building institutions that are capable, resilient and equipped to lead their own development agendas.

Regulatory Systems Strengthening

We support the development and strengthening of regulatory systems that enable timely access to safe, effective and quality-assured medical products. This includes support to National Regulatory Authorities, regional regulatory initiatives and continental efforts such as the African Medicines Agency.

Health Systems Strengthening

We work with partners to strengthen the systems, processes and capabilities required to improve public health outcomes. Our approach focuses on sustainable solutions that enhance national ownership, capacity and resilience.

Trusted Governance and Fiduciary Oversight

Supporting Health Initiatives (SHI) is an African-led implementation platform with its own leadership, strategy and programme portfolio.

SHI is hosted by Wits Health Consortium (WHC), a wholly owned company of the University of the Witwatersrand. Through its Shared Services Centre, WHC provides fiduciary, financial, compliance and administrative services that support SHI’s operations.

This arrangement enables SHI to focus on delivering impact, strengthening institutions and supporting implementation across Africa, while benefiting from established corporate governance and administrative infrastructure.
